Conveyor Roller Selection Guide

Choosing the right conveyor roller is critical for ensuring smooth material flow, longer service life, and reduced maintenance.

This guide explains how to select the correct roller diameter, shaft size, spacing, and type based on your application.

Key Factors for Conveyor Roller Selection

1. Load per Roller

The first step is to determine how much load each roller will carry.

Rule of thumb:
At least 3 rollers should support the load at any time.

Example:
If load = 900 kg → Load per roller ≈ 300 kg

👉 Refer: Conveyor Roller Load Capacity Chart

2. Roller diameter selection

Below are general load capacities for your ready reference, when there no metal in contact with rollers. These are very general recommendations and need careful selection based on other factors.  Roller Capacity changes based on the roller length so a detailed chart for the load capacity is in next section

Load per Roller            Recommended Roller Diameter

Upto 30 Kgs                     Dia 38

Upto 60 Kgs                     Dia 51

Upto 150Kgs                    Dia 60

Upto 300 Kgs                   Dia 76

Upto 500Kgs                    Dia 89

3. Roller Length

Longer rollers have lower load capacity due to bending.

Guideline:

  • Up to 600 mm → standard load capacity

  • 800–1200 mm → reduce load rating

  • Above 1200 mm → use higher diameter roller

Roller Pitch (Spacing)

Roller spacing is critical for smooth conveying.

Standard rule:

  • Minimum 3 - 4  rollers under the product

  • For cartons → closer pitch

  • For pallets → wider pitch

Example:

ApplicationTypical Roller Pitch

Carton conveyor       75 – 100 mm

Box handling           100 – 150 mm

Pallet conveyor         100 – 200 mm

Shaft Selection

The shaft carries the actual load.

Roller Dia         Recommended Shaft

32 / 38 / 50    - 12mm shaft

50 / 60            - 12 / 15 /17 / 20

76/89              - 17 / 20

For heavy-duty applications, always go for thicker shafts.

Type of Conveyor Roller

Gravity Rollers
  • Used in non-powered conveyors

  • Suitable for cartons and light loads

Sprocket Rollers
  • Used in chain-driven conveyors

  • Ideal for pallet handling

Tapered Rollers
  • Used in curved conveyors

Heavy Duty Rollers
  • Used for pallet conveyors and industrial loads

Material Selection

Choose roller material based on environment:

MaterialApplication

Mild Steel          General industrial use

Stainless Steel  Food & pharma

PVC Coated       Noise reduction / grip

Application Based Selection

Carton Conveyor
  • 50 mm rollers

  • Close pitch

  • Light duty

Industrial Conveyor
  • 60–76 mm rollers

  • Medium pitch

Pallet Conveyor
  • 76–89 mm rollers

  • Heavy duty shafts

  • Chain-driven rollers

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Selecting roller based only on diameter

  • Ignoring roller length effect

  • Using insufficient shaft diameter

  • Improper roller spacing

  • Not considering future load increase
